mother’s precious relationship

Mother’s relation is considered to be the most precious bond of humanity. She dedicates her entire life for her children without any selfishness. This is why Mother’s Day is celebrated all over the world to show respect to the mother. Every year on the second Sunday of May, people celebrate this day to make their mothers feel special. Some people give them gifts, while others make the day memorable by spending time with them. But many people do not know who started Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day begins

Mother’s Day originated in America, and the woman who started it was Anna Jarvis. Anna lived in West Virginia and had a deep devotion to her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis. His mother was active in social service and worked for the health of women and children.

Ana Jarvis’ inspiring journey

Anna considered her mother as her biggest inspiration. When her mother died in 1905, Anna was completely devastated. After mother’s death, he realized that there is no special day for mother’s sacrifice and love. This idea inspired him to create a day dedicated only to mothers.

It is said that Anna’s mother also wanted that there should be a day in her mother’s honour. To fulfill this wish of her mother, Anna celebrated the first Mother’s Day on 10 May 1908. On this occasion, he organized a special program in the church and distributed white carnation flowers, which was his mother’s favorite flower.

Mother’s Day celebrated on the second Sunday of May

Gradually people started celebrating Mother’s Day in different parts of America. Anna continuously wrote letters to politicians and newspapers to get it official recognition. Their hard work bore fruit and in 1914, the President of America officially declared the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day. After this this day became famous all over the world. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm in many countries including India. The importance of Mother’s Day has increased even more in the age of social media, where people share photos with their mothers and write special messages for them.

Anna Jarvis protest

However, an interesting twist to this story is that Anna Jarvis later turned against Mother’s Day herself. Actually, Anna wanted this day to be only for the respect and love of her mother. But with time, companies made it a medium of business. Companies selling cards, flowers and gifts started using this day for earning.

Anna felt very sad after seeing all this. He held protests at many places and appealed to the people not to limit Mother’s Day to mere appearances. He believed that a mother does not need expensive gifts, but true love and respect. It is said that she later also started a campaign to abolish Mother’s Day.
