Chennai: TVK chief C Joseph Vijay took oath as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Soon after, the news chief announced several decisions for the state, related to electricity, drug menace, women’s safety, among others.
Among his first decisions as chief minister, Vijay announced 200 units of power to be supplied for free, a special task force to control the drug menace, and a special force to ensure women’s safety in the state. The chief minister said he would maintain full attention to health, water, and education.
New CM assures ‘no false promises’
Assuring that he would not make false promises, the new chief minister thanked Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Praveen Chakravarty, the Left leaders MA Baby and all allies for supporting his party to form a government in the state.
“I have to tell you about the current status of the Tamil Nadu government. The state has been burdened with a debt exceeding Rs 10 lakh crore and the treasury has been completely emptied, leaving an unbearable burden,” news agency PTI quoted him as saying.
‘Will try to fulfil every assurance’
He added, “You have placed such a big responsibility on my hands. At the same time, I request you to give me some time as well. In a step-by-step manner, I will try to fulfill everything that I have assured. I will fulfill my assurances. At the same time, if you give me some time, it will be helpful and cooperative for me. This is your regime.”
Earlier in the day, he was sworn in as the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, which was attended by senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. This was the first time that a non-DMK, non-AIADMK government took office in the state in 60 years. His cabinet has a mix of the young and the experienced.
