Law enforcement officials in Laredo are currently probing a grim discovery of several bodies located within a cargo train close to the US-Mexico border. The bodies were uncovered shortly after 2:30 PM on Sunday inside a Union Pacific train near mile marker 13, adjacent to 12100 Jim Young Way, as reported by the Laredo Police Department. This area is situated near a Union Pacific rail yard in northern Laredo, recognized as one of the busiest commercial crossing points between the two nations.
While police confirmed the presence of multiple bodies within the train, they have not disclosed the exact number of deceased individuals. Additionally, authorities have yet to provide information regarding the cause of death or the duration the bodies may have been in the train. The identities and nationalities of the deceased remain unverified, and it is unclear whether they were migrants.
This unsettling discovery follows several days of extreme heat in the region, with weather reports indicating that temperatures in Laredo reached approximately 95°F (35°C) on Sunday, and the heat index soared to around 104°F (40°C). Laredo is directly across from Nuevo Laredo and has historically served as a significant corridor for freight and migration. In July 2024, Border Patrol agents in the Laredo sector rescued 23 migrants who were found hiding aboard a Union Pacific train, having been locked inside an autorack before their safe extraction.
