Tamil Nadu’s new Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has taken a major administrative decision in the state as soon as he takes charge and has ordered the closure of 717 government liquor shops. All these Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation shops were operating within a radius of 500 meters of religious places, educational institutions and bus stands. The government has directed to close them within the next two weeks.

This is considered to be Vijay’s first major policy decision after becoming the Chief Minister. According to the state government, there are currently a total of 4,765 liquor shops operated by TASMAC in Tamil Nadu. Of these, 717 shops have been identified as being near sensitive public places.

According to government data, 276 of the shops to be closed are located near religious places like temples, mosques and churches. While 186 shops are near schools and colleges, 255 shops are operating near bus stands.

The new government is calling this decision a big step towards social reform. The government says that concerns were being raised for a long time regarding the easy availability of liquor in public and sensitive areas, keeping this decision in mind.

Let us tell you that after taking oath, Vijay also approved many other important decisions. He announced the implementation of 200 units free electricity scheme for domestic consumers. Apart from this, approval was also given for the formation of special security force for the safety of women and setting up of anti-drug units in every district of the state. During the election campaign, Vijay had promised action against the growing drug network in the state.

However, the biggest political discussion is about the announcement in which Vijay talked about releasing a white paper on the financial position of the DMK government for the term 2021-2026. In his maiden address, he said, “I have to explain the present situation of the Tamil Nadu government. The state has a debt of more than Rs 10 lakh crore and the treasury is completely empty, creating an unbearable burden.”

Chief Minister Vijay also assured strict enforcement of law and order and taking strict steps for the safety of women. TVK currently has 107 seats in the assembly after Vijay’s resignation. Apart from this, the government also has the support of 13 MLAs from Congress, VCK, IUML and Left parties. Vijay may soon have to face a floor test to prove his majority in the assembly.
