Ovary Health Issues: In today's times, planning to have a baby after the age of 30 has become very common. Women no longer wish to confine their roles solely to domestic life and household responsibilities. Consequently, due to factors such as career aspirations, financial security, and personal life goals, family planning has often taken a back seat. While there is nothing inherently wrong with this approach, it is crucial to remember that as a woman ages, her ovarian capacity begins to diminish, and the chances of conceiving naturally gradually decrease.
Nevertheless, many women do successfully achieve a healthy pregnancy even after the age of 30. However, one must not overlook the fact that as a woman gets older, her natural fertility begins to decline gradually. The primary reason for this is that both the quantity and quality of healthy eggs within the ovaries begin to diminish. Therefore, if you are considering planning a family after the age of 30, here is some expert advice to help ensure a healthy pregnancy, provided by Dr. Aastha Gupta, Senior IVF Consultant, Infertility Specialist, and Obstetrician-Gynecologist at Delhi IVF, New Delhi.
What is Premature Ovarian Insufficiency? Experts explain that every woman is born with a finite number of eggs. During each monthly menstrual cycle, one egg matures and is released. After the age of 30, a decline in both the quantity and quality of eggs begins, and this process accelerates significantly after the age of 35. If eggs are not produced regularly, or if ovulation does not occur correctly, conceiving can become difficult. In some women, egg production ceases prematurely—well before the typical age of menopause—a condition known as Premature Ovarian Insufficiency.
What Causes the Failure of Egg Production in the Ovaries? Several factors can impact fertility. In addition to advancing age, hormonal imbalances—such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)—can also adversely affect the process of ovulation. In this condition, the hormonal balance becomes disrupted, preventing eggs from developing properly and leading to irregular periods.
Factors That Damage the Ovaries: Modern lifestyles are also impacting women's fertility. Chronic stress, lack of sleep, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, poor dietary habits, excessive dieting, and a lack of physical activity can all affect reproductive hormones. Additionally, thyroid disorders, diabetes, endometriosis, autoimmune diseases, ovarian surgery, or cancer treatments can also cause damage to the ovaries. A family history of early menopause may also increase the risk.
How to Identify Improper Ovulation: Irregular periods can be a sign that ovulation is not occurring properly. Delayed periods, missed periods, light bleeding, or periods that end prematurely may indicate a hormonal imbalance. Some women may also experience symptoms such as unwanted facial hair, acne, weight gain, hot flashes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances.
If a woman over the age of 35 is unable to conceive after trying for six months, she should consult a doctor. Fertility assessments typically involve blood tests—such as a hormonal profile, AMH, and FSH—to analyze hormone levels. An ultrasound is also performed to assess the condition of the ovaries and follicles.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause of the problem. In many cases, lifestyle adjustments and medication can help restore normal ovulation. A balanced diet, regular exercise, stress reduction, and adequate rest contribute to improving fertility. If necessary, options such as IUI, IVF, or egg freezing may also be considered.
Male Fertility: Male fertility is equally important. Low sperm count, poor sperm quality, smoking, obesity, stress, and alcohol consumption can all negatively impact a man's reproductive capacity.
