On Wednesday, the Tamil Nadu Assembly witnessed Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay successfully securing a trust vote. However, this process has significantly shaken the foundation of the state's second-largest opposition party, AIADMK. What was intended as a display of strength for the new government turned into a profound political crisis for the party led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS). A majority of 118 votes was required in the 234-member assembly, and Vijay's TVK government exceeded expectations by garnering support from 144 legislators, marking a resounding victory. Yet, the aftermath of this win has been overshadowed by turmoil within AIADMK.

AIADMK's Unity Under Scrutiny

During the trust vote, EPS declared that all AIADMK legislators would oppose Chief Minister Vijay. This situation was meant to test the unity of AIADMK, a party whose majority of members had shown support for Vijay's TVK government just a day prior.

Election Results and Party Dynamics

In the assembly elections announced on May 4, AIADMK emerged as the third-largest party with 47 seats. Meanwhile, Vijay's TVK claimed the largest share with 108 seats, and the DMK, led by M.K. Stalin, secured the second position with 59 seats.

Emergence of Factions Within AIADMK

Following the election results, a faction led by Shanmugam, supported by 30 of AIADMK's 47 legislators, is positioning itself as a majority group within the party. This faction recently declared S.P. Velumani as their leader, indicating a potential shift in power dynamics.

EPS's Challenge and Its Implications

EPS's challenge to the TVK-led coalition is perceived as an attempt to assert dominance over AIADMK rather than merely contesting the government. This move places EPS in a precarious position.

Risk of a Split in AIADMK

The threat of a split looms over AIADMK, as at least 30 legislators, led by S.P. Velumani, recently pledged their support to Chief Minister Vijay. Shanmugam has accused EPS of attempting to ally with the DMK, a long-standing rival of AIADMK.

Allegations of Betrayal and Internal Conflict

Shanmugam stated, "AIADMK was founded by M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) to oppose the DMK, and for five decades, we have fought politically against them. However, EPS has tried to form a government with DMK's backing, which no legislator agreed to, leaving us astonished."

AIADMK's Response to Internal Dissent

On Tuesday, AIADMK launched an attack against the rebel faction led by Shanmugam and Velumani, accusing them of attempting to form a government with DMK's support. The party's official X handle stated that this faction's claims were merely a "bundle of lies" from those who failed to achieve electoral success in their districts.

Accusations of Bribery

During his address in the assembly on Wednesday, EPS alleged that legislators were offered cash to vote in favor of Vijay.
