Relief to the common man: Government takes strict action to control sugar prices, complete ban on export till September

ban on sugar export

The central government has taken a big decision on the export of sugar. Amidst the ongoing tension in the Middle East, the Government of India has banned the export of sugar till September 30, 2026 or until further orders. The government has banned the export of raw, white and refined sugar. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a notification changing the export policy from 'Restricted' to 'Prohibited'.

In the order issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, it has been made clear that this ban applies to raw, white and refined sugar. It also marks a change in policy from “Restricted” to “Prohibited”. This is a major reversal in policy as the government had earlier allowed limited exports of sugar in anticipation of additional production.

They will get discount

The notification also said that if the loading had started before May 13 or if the consignment was handed over to the customs authorities before the order came into force, then the shipment would be allowed. It has been said in the order that sugar will be exported only on the basis of permission given by the Government of India to other countries to meet their food security needs and on the request of their governments.

EU and America also out of the ban

Last month, the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association had estimated India's total sugar production at 32 million tonnes in the season ending September 30. This was a revision of the earlier estimate of 32.4 million tonnes. Therefore, experts are seeing this export ban as a step to control the risk of inflation amid increasing uncertainty due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The government said that the special thing is that this ban will not apply to sugar exports to the European Union and the United States under the existing tariff-rate quota and arrangements.
