Jaguar has finally ended years of speculation by officially confirming the name of its upcoming all-electric grand tourer: the Jaguar Type 01. Announced on 12 May 2026, the luxury four-door EV represents far more than just a new model. It signals the beginning of an entirely new chapter for the iconic British marque.
Set to be fully revealed later this year, the Type 01 is the first production vehicle born from Jaguar’s controversial rebranding and electrification strategy that began in 2023. The company is repositioning itself as a low-volume, ultra-premium luxury manufacturer focused exclusively on electric vehicles.
A Name Inspired by Jaguar’s Legendary Past
The “Type” naming structure is a deliberate nod to some of Jaguar’s most celebrated creations, including the Jaguar E-Type, Jaguar C-Typeand Jaguar F-Type.
According to Jaguar, the “01” carries dual symbolism. The zero represents zero tailpipe emissions and a complete reset for the brand, while the one signifies the first model in Jaguar’s new electric era.
Jaguar Managing Director Rawdon Glover described the upcoming car as something that “looks and drives like no other electric car,” while still preserving the company’s heritage and identity.
The Type 01 badge itself will reportedly sit within Jaguar’s new “strikethrough motif,” positioned where the bonnet meets the windscreen.
Massive Power and Fast Charging Capability
Jaguar has confirmed several headline specifications for the Type 01, and the numbers place it firmly among the world’s most powerful luxury EVs.
The car uses a tri-motor setup producing more than 986bhp (735kW) and a staggering 1,300Nm of torque. Power comes from a massive 120kWh battery pack developed specifically for Jaguar.
The EV is built on an advanced 850V electrical architecture capable of charging at speeds up to 350kW. Jaguar claims the Type 01 is targeting more than 644km (400 miles) of driving range, although official certification figures are yet to be released.
A Radical Design Approach
One of the most talked-about design details is the complete absence of a rear window. Jaguar has not yet revealed how rear visibility will function, though digital camera systems are increasingly common in high-end EVs.
The Type 01 adopts a sleek four-door GT silhouette designed to blend long-distance comfort with high-performance driving characteristics. Early prototype images suggest a dramatic, low-slung stance with futuristic proportions aimed squarely at the ultra-luxury EV segment.
Jaguar prototypes are expected to appear publicly during the Monaco Formula E race weekend, offering the world its first closer look at the car in motion.
Jaguar’s Biggest Gamble Yet
The Type 01 arrives at a crucial moment for Jaguar. The brand’s 2024 rebrand campaign sparked intense debate among enthusiasts and industry observers, with many questioning whether Jaguar could successfully reinvent itself in the luxury EV space.
Now, the Type 01 becomes the first real test of that strategy.
While pricing and production numbers remain unconfirmed, expectations suggest the vehicle will comfortably exceed AUD $100,000 and compete against premium electric grand tourers from brands like Porsche and Mercedes-Benz.
For Jaguar, the stakes could not be higher. But with the Type 01, the company appears ready to trade nostalgia for reinvention — and make its boldest statement in decades.
