Vat Savitri Vrat 2026 Rules: The Vat Savitri Vrat—observed to attain eternal marital bliss—is observed on the day of Jyeshtha Amavasya (the New Moon day in the month of Jyeshtha). This year, the Vat Savitri Vrat falls on Saturday, May 16th. According to the Panchang (almanac), the Amavasya Tithi (lunar phase) for Vat Savitri extends from 5:11 AM on May 16th to 1:30 AM on May 17th.
On this day, married women observe a fast and worship the Vat Vriksha (Banyan tree), Goddess Savitri, and Satyavan. Through this observance, they receive blessings for enduring marital happiness, and their conjugal life becomes blissful. Women observing the Vat Savitri Vrat for the very first time must adhere to specific rules; only then will their fast yield its intended spiritual fruits.
**Rules for Vat Savitri Vrat**
1. If you are observing the fast for the first time, you should wake up during the *Brahma Muhurat* (the auspicious pre-dawn period) on the day of Vat Savitri and take a ritual bath. On this specific day, the *Brahma Muhurat* spans from 4:07 AM to 4:48 AM.
2. On this day, women observing the fast should wear garments in shades of red, yellow, or orange. They may also choose to wear their wedding attire or a brand-new saree. They should adorn themselves with *Solah Shringar* (the sixteen traditional bridal adornments).
3. After taking the ritual bath, take a solemn pledge (*Sankalp*) to observe the Vat Savitri Vrat and perform the associated worship. Subsequently, arrange and gather all the necessary materials for the *Puja* (worship ceremony).
4. The *Puja* materials should include a bamboo fan, raw cotton thread, soaked chickpeas, incense (*Dhup*), an oil lamp (*Deep*), cow's ghee, fresh flowers, seasonal fruits, traditional marital symbols (*Suhag* items) such as *Sindoor* (vermilion), *Bindi*, bangles, etc., fruits of the Banyan tree, and an image or idol of Goddess Savitri and Satyavan.
5. During this fast, the *Vat Vriksha*—that is, the Banyan tree—is the primary object of worship. It is revered as a divine tree, believed to be the abode of the Holy Trinity: Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva).
6. The worship ceremony begins by offering water to the roots of the Banyan tree. Subsequently, the raw cotton thread is wound around the tree trunk. While performing the ritual circumambulation (*Parikrama*) around the Banyan tree, one should wind the raw cotton thread around it 7, 12, 51, or 108 times.
7. During the circumambulation, pray for the longevity of your husband. During the worship, offer items such as chickpeas, fruits, and flowers, and listen to the legend of the Vat Savitri Vrat. Use a bamboo fan to fan the Banyan tree, and subsequently, your husband.
8. This fast may be observed in two ways: as *Nirjala* (without water) or as *Phalahar* (subsisting on fruits). Follow whichever method is feasible for you or is the prevailing custom in your household.
9. In some regions, following the worship, devotees swallow a bud from the Banyan tree and a soaked chickpea, aided by water.
10. After the worship, seek the blessings of your mother-in-law and the elderly women of the family.
