Boots issues alert to customers with repeat prescriptions in May
Reach Daily Express | May 15, 2026 6:40 PM CST

Boots has issued a UK-wide alert to all its app users, reminding them of something potentially very important. The alert could help millions who rely on certain medications avoid being left in a potentially dangerous situation.

The next bank holiday for most workers in 2026 across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland falls on Monday, May 25. Having only just had a bank holiday on Monday, May 4, some people could be caught out when shops and services - like pharmacies - run on reduced hours.

The app alert from Boots read: "Remember to order your prescription ahead of the bank holiday". People who clicked the notification would have been directed to its website, which handles prescriptions.

Due to the bank holiday, most UK pharmacies will be operating on significantly reduced hours or closed entirely for the day. People have been given plenty of notice to order medication in advance so they can avoid the risk of running out over the long weekend, when services will be disrupted.

How to order a repeat prescription with Boots

Ordering a prescription through Boots can be done entirely online or via its app. Boots manages both NHS and private repeat prescriptions.

  • Sign Up: Go to the Boots Prescription Support page or open the Boots app and sign in using your NHS login.
  • Select a Boots Pharmacy: Select Boots as your chosen pharmacy. Boots will automatically link to your GP record and see your repeat medication list.
  • Order your medication: Simply tick the items you need and place your order.
  • Collect or Deliver: Choose to pick up your order at your local Boots Store. Some patients can have it delivered for free (England only).
  • If you care for a family member or friend, you can (with their consent) manage their prescriptions from one 'family' account. Once logged in to the Boots app, add the new patient and select their GP.

You can order their prescription items when they are due, collect on their behalf or arrange delivery to yourself or directly to them.

How soon should I order my repeat prescription?

The NHS website says that if you have run out of your prescribed medicine and need an urgent supply, there are a few ways to get an emergency supply, including out-of-hours. It says: "If you get your medicine with a repeat prescription, you should usually allow five working days to request your prescription and get your medicine."

Ahead of the bank holiday weekend, people should try to get their prescription requests in at least a week in advance. Monday, May 18, is a week away from the bank holiday.

The NHS adds: "When this is not possible, and you've completely run out, you can use the 111 online emergency prescription service. They'll ask some questions, including where you are and when you are due to take your medicine, so they can suggest the best way to get it."

The 111 service is available 24/7, including bank holidays. If you cannot access a pharmacy or 111, visit a local urgent treatment centre where you can be seen by a healthcare professional after a consultation
