Binman's 'do not' warning to UK households with a wheelie bin
Reach Daily Express | May 15, 2026 11:39 PM CST

  • A binman has warned that people trying to put carpets in household bins could have their rubbish left uncollected on the kerbside. Ashley, who goes by @Theno1.binman on TikTok, explained that carpets are considered bulky waste items.
  • He said: "Carpets? You do not put them in the bin. They are too big." Carpets cannot go in regular bins because they are bulky, heavy, and non-biodegradable, creating issues at landfills and recycling facilities, he said.
  • Most carpets are made of synthetic fibres like nylon or polypropylene. These can take hundreds of years to decompose.
  • Homeowners have several 'proper' options, including contacting local authorities for bulky waste collection or taking carpets to recycling centres. Some flooring companies may also remove old carpets during installation, though this usually involves a charge.
  • Free alternatives include selling good-condition carpets online through Facebook Marketplace or donating them to animal rescue centres. Ashley also highlighted other banned items, like crisp packets, and can see bins left uncollected. The binman's advice comes as many councils impose fines for incorrectly disposed of waste items.
