On Friday, India witnessed a notable increase in petrol and diesel prices, rising by approximately ₹3 per liter. This marks the first substantial hike in fuel costs in nearly four years, driven by escalating global crude oil prices amid tensions in Western Asia. Government oil companies are struggling to cope with these rising costs.

In response to this increase, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, Vijay, labeled the decision as 'unacceptable.' A statement from his office highlighted that the central government's public sector oil companies have raised the prices of petroleum products, specifically petrol and diesel, by ₹3 per liter each. He criticized the companies for not reducing prices proportionately when international crude oil rates decline, suggesting they prioritize profits instead.

Vijay further expressed that the timing of this price hike, following assembly elections in five states, is inappropriate. He emphasized that this increase will burden the common people, leading to higher transportation and living costs, exacerbating inflation.

The statement also pointed out that the price rise will significantly impact the monthly income of the poor and middle class who rely on two-wheelers and scooters. Those taking bank loans or renting vehicles will face additional financial strain, affecting their economic stability. Concerns were raised about the potential increase in rental costs for vehicles due to the rise in petroleum prices, which could lead to higher prices for daily essentials, ultimately diminishing the purchasing power of the economically disadvantaged.

Vijay also expressed worries for micro, small, and medium enterprises, stating that the increased costs of petroleum products could lead to a downturn in market and export activities. He concluded his address by urging the central government to immediately reverse the hike in petroleum prices to alleviate the impact on the poor, middle class, and small businesses.
