When it emerged that Vernon Kay and Tess Daly had chosen to go their separate ways following 24 years of marriage, numerous fans were left stunned - and fresh statistics published today reveal he commands a remarkably substantial following. The BBC disclosed on Thursday that 52-year-old Vernon's BBC Radio 2 programme - which he inherited from Ken Bruce in 2023 - remains the most listened-to across UK radio for the second consecutive year, attracting 6.6 million listeners weekly. Radio 2 also retained its position as the UK's most listened to individual radio station with a weekly reach of 12.6million. In March, Vernon was the frontrunner to succeed Scott Mills following the presenter's departure - with Rylan Clark, Clara Amfo and Tony Blackburn also among the contenders.

Vernon and wife Tess, 57, confirmed their separation last week through a joint statement which read: "After much consideration, and with a deep sense of care and respect for one another, we have made the decision to separate amicably.

"This has not been an easy choice, but it comes from a place of mutual understanding and a shared desire of what is best for both of us," it added.

The statement continued: "We remain great friends and, most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority."

It added: "There are no other parties involved in this decision. We kindly ask for privacy during this time. We will not be making any further public comments." At the time, a source told the Mirror: "After they released the statement, Vernon and Tess took a moment to toast each other and their futures. They only want the best for each other and their family.

"There has been no big fallout, more a gradual growing apart and wanting different things. They have vowed to stay friends and to keep things classy when it comes to the split and any future interviews they give. They only want the best for each other." they said.

A source close to the couple told The Sun: "After they released the statement, Vernon and Tess took a moment to toast each other and their futures. They only want the best for each other and their family. There has been no big fallout, more a gradual growing apart and wanting different things."

They added: "They have vowed to stay friends and to keep things classy when it comes to the split and any future interviews they give. They only want the best for each other."

Earlier this month, Vernon thanked his listeners for their support during this difficult period. He previously said: "I just want to say on behalf of me and Tess, thank you for your well wishes. It's been greatly appreciated."
