New Delhi. Watermelon is consumed on a large scale in summer to cool the body and overcome water shortage, but in recent times, there have been reports from many states of the country of people’s health deteriorating and in some cases death after eating watermelon. After these incidents, concerns about food safety and food poisoning have increased.
Many people fell ill after eating watermelon in Malav village located in Belipar police station area of Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh. It was told that people first ate Maggi and later consumed watermelon. After this, complaints of vomiting, diarrhea and difficulty in breathing started. Nine people were admitted to the district hospital in critical condition.
Similarly, a case of sudden death of a 21-year-old girl came to light in Sher Nagar Naraini village of Bijnor district. The family claimed that the girl had eaten watermelon, after which her health deteriorated. However, official confirmation has not been made yet by the administration.

In Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district also, a person died after eating watermelon, while his son is admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. It was told that both of them had eaten watermelon due to heartburn, after which their condition deteriorated after some time. Doctors have initially expressed suspicion of food poisoning.
In Ghurkot village of Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh, four children fell ill after eating cut watermelon, out of which a 15-year-old teenager died during treatment. Doctors say that the possibility of bacterial infection and food poisoning cannot be ruled out in the case.
In Sonbarsa village of Buxar district of Bihar, the health of eight people of the same family deteriorated after eating watermelon. All were admitted to the hospital after complaining of vomiting, diarrhea and headache. Doctors have described it as a case of food poisoning.
In the case of death of four people of a family in Mumbai’s Pydhuni area some time ago, watermelon was initially considered to be the reason, but later in the Food and Drug Department and forensic investigation, no adulteration or poison was found in the watermelon. The investigation revealed food poisoning as the cause of death.
Experts say that it is generally safe to eat watermelon, but spoiled, cut for a long time or infected watermelon can be harmful to health. According to gastrology experts, eating contaminated fruits can cause problems like vomiting, diarrhea and food poisoning, hence it is important to be careful while consuming cut fruits.
