Regular checkup saved the life of 48 year old Rakesh
Rakesh, 48, resident of Gurugram, was often ignoring his health due to his busy lifestyle. When he got a routine health checkup done at the request of his family, the report shocked everyone. There was a small tumor in his left kidney, which was located very close to the blood supply veins. The matter of relief was that the disease was detected in the early stages. Doctors advised him to remove only the tumor instead of removing the entire kidney (radical nephrectomy). The tumor was then removed through a robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy procedure and Rakesh recovered and returned home within a few days.

Why is robotic-assisted surgery special?
Dr. Punit Ahluwalia, Senior Director and HOD, Uro-Oncology and Robotic Surgery at Medanta Gurugram, said, “Patients get nervous as soon as they hear the name of tumor in the kidney that their entire kidney will be removed. But today’s modern robotic systems give us so much precision and control that we can remove only the tumor without damaging the healthy part.”

Retaining kidney function protects patients from many future complications, such as:

  • Reduction in risk of high blood pressure.
  • Prevention of heart diseases.
  • Little to no chance of needing dialysis in the future.

How does robotic technology work?
During this surgery, robotic systems use very small and flexible instruments, which can move with greater precision and stability than a human hand. This entire system is completely under the control of the surgeon. With the help of robotic arms, doctors are able to easily perform operations in the most sensitive and deep parts of the body. Also, due to 3D view (magnified view) visible on the screen, even the smallest veins are clearly visible, thereby minimizing the risk.

This technique has major advantages over traditional open surgery. In this Patients experience very little pain after the operation. There is very little blood flow during surgery. There are very small and light marks of stitches on the body. Also, one does not have to stay in the hospital for long and the patient starts walking within a day.

Never ignore these symptoms
Every year 16,000 to 18,000 new cases of kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma) are reported in India. Dr. Ahluwalia has advised that if symptoms like blood in urine, persistent pain in the back or side, unexplained weight loss, extreme fatigue or frequent fever are seen, then one should immediately contact the doctor. Additionally, for better recovery after surgery, one needs to drink enough water, eat nutritious food and completely stay away from smoking or alcohol.
