New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer joined the likes of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma in an elite list by becoming only the fifth Indian to complete 100 matches as captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Iyer achieved the feat during Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, in the IPL 2026 on Sunday, May 17.

Iyer led Punjab Kings out in Dharamshala on Sunday in his 30th game as captain for the franchise. The star India batter has also captained Delhi Capitals (DC) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL. Iyer remains the only captain in the history of IPL to have led three teams to an IPL final.

He reached his maiden final as captain with the Delhi Capitals in 2020, before winning his maiden IPL title as captain with the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024. Iyer led Punjab Kings to their only second final last season, but failed to inspire them to their maiden trophy as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ended their 18-year-long wait for their first IPL title.

Iyer, who took over as Delhi Capitals skipper midway through the IPL 2018 season, led his former team in 41 matches from 2018 to 2020. He led Kolkata Knight Riders in 29 matches from 2022 to 2024 and has already led Punjab Kings in 30 matches since the start of last season. He is the fifth Indian after Dhoni, Rohit, Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli to lead in 100 matches in the IPL.

The legendary Dhoni holds the record for most matches as captain in the history of IPL. Dhoni has led Chennai Super Kings and the no-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants in 235 matches in the IPL in his career so far. While he has stepped down from captaincy, Dhoni remains part of CSK’s squad in the ongoing IPL 2026. However, he is yet to feature this season owing to a side strain.
