Tamulpur, May 17: A suspected mass food poisoning incident has left around 100 individuals from Dighalipar village, located near Gandhichowk in Assam's Tamulpur district, feeling unwell. This situation has necessitated urgent medical attention and the hospitalization of numerous patients, including children.

Details of the Incident

The troubling event reportedly took place after attendees consumed food during a recent ceremony for the installation of the sacred Bathou sijou plant at the home of Anil Boro.

Witnesses noted that those who participated in the feast did not exhibit any symptoms on the day of the event.

However, by Friday, many began to suffer from severe gastrointestinal issues, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, and headaches.

Medical Response

As the health of several individuals worsened, medical teams were dispatched to the village.

On Saturday, doctors treated 29 patients on-site, but the number of those needing hospitalization surged on Sunday.

Currently, 65 individuals are receiving care at Uttar Betana State Dispensary, with several children among the affected.

Medical personnel are providing assistance, and the patients' conditions are being closely monitored.

Community Impact

A local resident reported that symptoms appeared swiftly among those who had partaken in the food served during the ceremony.

“Children have also been affected. Around 65 people are now admitted to the hospital, though most are recovering,” the resident stated.

Official Response

In response to the situation, Goreswar MLA Victor Kumar Das visited the hospital to meet with patients and medical staff.

Speaking to reporters, the MLA reassured that despite the large number of illnesses, the situation is manageable.

“Fortunately, there is no major cause for concern at the moment, and most patients are responding well to treatment. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, but the health department is actively monitoring the situation,” Das commented.
