The groom, He Yinsheng, a professional wrestler from Zunyi in Guizhou Province, staged the unconventional celebration with his wife at a local hotel in early May.
Instead of a traditional wedding stage, the couple set up a wrestling ring. A giant screen displayed a dramatic “Groom vs Bride” poster, the South China Morning Post reported.
The newlyweds each led a team in a best-of-three contest, with the losing side responsible for household chores. Videos from the wedding show performers opening the matches with body slams, takedowns and close-range grappling as guests watched intently. Some children stood with bowls in their hands, too absorbed in the action to eat.
For the finale, the bride and groom entered the ring themselves. Encouraged by the crowd, the bride quickly took control, avoiding her husband’s moves before throwing him to the floor with a shoulder throw. The referee declared her the winner, leaving the housework to the groom.
Like every bout that night, the result had been planned in advance.
He told Jimu News that all performers were professionally trained and that safety was a priority throughout the show. “Of course I had to lose in the end. I could not let her do the housework,” he said.
He said the idea came to him while planning the wedding, when he realized the costs were higher than expected. Rather than hiring singers and dancers, he decided to put on a wrestling match, and his wife supported the plan.
Both sets of parents said they “did not understand it, but respected their choice.” The couple have not publicly revealed how they met.
“Our wedding had food and a show, so people were happy to attend. In the end, nearly 300 guests turned up, far more than we expected,” He said.
He added that he hoped the wedding would help introduce more people to professional wrestling, which remains a niche subculture in China, with shows mostly held at bars, beer festivals and company year-end parties.
