The extra month that occurs approximately every two and a half to three years is known as *Adhik Maas*. Since it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is also referred to as *Purushottam Maas*. This period is considered highly auspicious for worshipping Lord Vishnu, performing acts of charity, and observing religious rituals; however, one should also refrain from certain activities to avoid negative consequences.

**A Pause on Auspicious Ceremonies**
During *Purushottam Maas*, the performance of auspicious ceremonies is generally considered prohibited. According to the scriptures, rituals such as engagements, weddings, *Griha Pravesh* (housewarming ceremonies), *Mundan* (first haircut ceremonies), or ear-piercing ceremonies should not be conducted during this holy period. Since the Sun does not undergo a zodiacal transition (*Sankranti*) during this specific month, auspicious ceremonies performed during this time are believed not to yield their intended beneficial results.

**Avoid Starting New Ventures**
If you are planning to launch a new business or purchase a new property, hold off for a while! During *Adhik Maas*, one should refrain from initiating any new projects, business ventures, or major investments, as starting new endeavors during this period is unlikely to yield favorable outcomes. Instead, this time is considered ideal for self-reflection and spiritual practice (*Sadhana*) dedicated to the Divine.

**Steer Clear of *Tamasic* Food**
Lord Vishnu is fond of *Sattvic* (pure and wholesome) qualities. Therefore, one must pay special attention to one's diet during *Purushottam Maas*. During this month, strictly avoid consuming *Tamasic* foods—such as garlic, onions, meat, and alcohol. Endeavor to consume only simple, *Sattvic* meals throughout this period. This practice purifies both the body and the mind, thereby ensuring the efficacy of your worship.

**Keep These Points in Mind**
While acts of charity and chanting (*Japa*) performed during *Adhik Maas* yield immense spiritual merit, improper conduct can just as swiftly negate those accumulated virtues. Therefore, strictly abstain from the following actions during this period; otherwise, you may have to face negative repercussions:

*   Refrain from telling lies to anyone.
*   Do not insult anyone, nor speak ill of others behind their backs.
*   Avoid using harsh language or engaging in abusive speech.
*   Lead as simple a life as possible.
*   Avoid sleeping during the day, and do not consume unclean or stale food.
