So, what exactly makes a single gemstone worth the price of a sprawling Delhi estate? For starters, it’s the sheer, mind-bending impossibility of its color. The Ocean Dream boasts a mesmerizing, deep ocean hue that feels almost otherworldly. But the way it got that color is entirely natural. It was born from millions of years of exposure to radiation deep within the earth's crust. Discovered in Central Africa back in the 1990s, the rough stone originally weighed a hefty 11.70 carats.

Transforming it into the 5.50-carat marvel we see today was no walk in the park. Cutting a diamond with this specific kind of natural radiation is notoriously high-risk. Just the intense heat generated from the cutter’s wheel can permanently alter or completely ruin that delicate, million-year-old color. But the cutters took the massive gamble. They opted for a modified triangular brilliant cut.

This specific shape was chosen to save as much of the original rough stone as possible while maximizing its sparkle. It paid off brilliantly. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) certified it not just as a Fancy Vivid blue-green, but also as a Type Ia diamond. In plain terms? It has a level of exceptional natural purity that most jewelers only dream of seeing in their entire lifetimes.

The Floating Masterpiece

Of course, a gem this rare demands a setting that does it absolute justice. Whoever manages to win the bid today isn't just getting a loose stone to keep hidden in a vault. The Ocean Dream is currently mounted in a wildly contemporary ring that doubles as a piece of modern art. It is surrounded by a sleek, geometric constellation of Asscher-cut white diamonds. Thanks to cleverly designed gold prongs, the massive blue-green centerpiece actually looks like it’s floating mid-air above the wearer's finger. From the Smithsonian to the Auction Block

This actually isn't the first time The Ocean Dream has commanded the world’s attention. If the name sounds familiar, you might be thinking back to 2003. That was the year the gemstone made its grand global debut at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. It served as a major draw for the legendary "Splendor of Diamonds" exhibition, sharing the spotlight with other mythical, history-making stones. Since that iconic museum run, the diamond has been surprisingly elusive.

In fact, this is only the second time it has ever appeared at auction. Ironically, its first time on the block was also at a Christie’s Geneva event, exactly twelve years ago in May 2014, where it sold for a staggering ₹84 crore. For the past dozen years, it has been locked away securely in the same private collection. Now, it’s finally back on the open market.
