CBSE Class 12 Re-evaluation: Following the CBSE Class 12 results, students have raised questions regarding the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. During a press conference, the Education Secretary stated that the fee would be refunded if a student’s marks increased following re-evaluation.

CBSE Class 12 Re-evaluation: Since the announcement of the CBSE Class 12 results, the most widely discussed topics this time have been re-evaluation and the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. Many students have claimed on social media that they received marks lower than they had expected. Amidst the ongoing controversies surrounding the on-screen marking of the CBSE Class 12 board examinations, the Board held a press conference.

To provide relief to students, the CBSE Board has reduced the re-evaluation fee. Students can now view their answer sheets for a nominal fee of just ₹100; previously, this fee stood at ₹700. Additionally, for the re-evaluation itself, students will be required to pay ₹25 per question. Meanwhile, a question lingers in the minds of students: if their marks increase following re-evaluation, will their fees be refunded? Let’s find out the answer…

Full Fee to be Refunded

The Board has clarified that if a student opts for re-evaluation and their marks subsequently increase, the entire fee paid by the student will be refunded. This announcement by CBSE is being viewed as a major relief for students. It is worth noting that there has been a decline in the results this year. Compared to the previous year, the pass percentage has dropped by 3 percent—falling from 88 percent to 85 percent. Some students also feel that they deserved to receive higher marks than those actually awarded to them. CBSE states that these changes have been implemented to provide relief to students and to streamline the overall process. Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar stated that the Board does not want any student to feel that their hard work has not been duly recognized.

Why did the controversy surrounding the OSM system arise?

In fact, this year, the CBSE utilized the OSM—or ‘On-Screen Marking’—system for the evaluation of Class 12 answer sheets. Under this system, students’ answer sheets were scanned and evaluated digitally. Following the announcement of the results, several students reported receiving lower marks than anticipated, particularly in subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Some students even pointed out that, despite securing high scores in the JEE Main examination, they received comparatively low marks in their Board examinations. In response to these grievances, the CBSE held a press conference to clarify that the OSM is not a novel system and has, in fact, been utilized on previous occasions. The Board further explained that approximately 9.8 million answer sheets were scanned this time around; however, any answer sheets that encountered technical glitches during the scanning process were subsequently evaluated manually.

How can students apply for re-checking?

If a student feels that their marks are lower than expected, they may visit the official CBSE website to apply for re-checking. The initial step in this process requires the student to apply for the verification of marks. Subsequently, they are granted access to view their scanned answer sheets. If, upon review, a student identifies a potential error in the evaluation of a specific question, they may then apply for the re-evaluation of that particular question. The entire process is conducted online, and the requisite fees must also be submitted electronically. Since the CBSE releases separate deadlines for each stage of the process, students are advised to regularly monitor the Board’s website to ensure they do not miss any critical dates.
