In a significant turn of events for cricket worldwide, the start to the 2026-27 season of Big Bash League might take place in India. The venue which is likely to host the season opener of BBL 2026-27 is MA Chidambaram, Chennai.

According to the reports, a delegation of Cricket Australia which also included top officials like Phil Rigby and Margot Harley had visited the Chepauk Stadium recently and made an assessment about whether the 2026-27 season can opener be staged at Chennai.

This is part of the larger plan of Cricket Australia in trying to tap into Indian investment and fortify its relationship with the Indian cricket market for BBL.

According to the sources quoted by SEN Cricket, it is believed that Cricket Australia would be taking most of the responsibility for bearing the expenses for the first match, but the plan would need the approval of Board of Control for Cricket in India before it gets concertized.

Cricket Australia is looking forward for a partnership with India and for the privatization plan, Cricket Australia's CEO Todd Greenberg assured that "Cricket should not be 'sold' to India," he told SEN Radio, rather that the world of sport should find good business partners.

The Australian state associations are however having concerns with the IPL franchise owners entering the fray of Big Bash league given that IPL backed groups already have ownership stake in other global T20 leagues like those in England and South Africa. However, Todd Greenberg feels that investment from India could be the future of cricket.

Chennai Opener Could Be Historic Moment for BBL

If given the go ahead, the season opener would be played outside Australia for the first time in the history of the BBL.

Chepauk has been the stage for several major international and franchise cricket matches in the past and stands as one of the most recognizable cricket grounds in the world. The decision is also widely seen as an effort by Cricket Australia to enhance the popularity of the BBL in the Indian market – one of the largest cricket consuming nations on earth.

The cricket board of Australia is exploring a hybrid ownership model in the present day, wherein certain teams are under the private ownership, while certain teams are under the control of their respective state associations.

Greenberg feels this system can be successful and stated that Cricket Australia wishes to conduct proper research on the new concept before any final decisions were made.

For the present time, all attention is turned to BCCI; the approval of which may open doors to the first ever BBL opening night in Chennai, later in the year.
