Train and Bus Tickets: If you frequently book train or bus tickets, always keep these five points in mind; otherwise, you too could fall victim to some form of fraud. Remember these tips whenever you are booking a ticket.

Save Yourself From Scammers: In today's era of digital booking—where reserving tickets has become incredibly easy—cybercriminals and fraudsters have, conversely, devised new methods of deception to ensnare unsuspecting individuals. These scammers become particularly active—and begin setting their traps—during peak seasons such as festivals, weddings, and summer vacations, when there is a severe shortage of confirmed tickets.

1. Always Use Official Apps and Websites

Always ensure that whenever you book a train or bus ticket, you do so exclusively through official apps or websites; failing to do so could make you the victim of a major cyber fraud. Furthermore, for train bookings, strictly use only the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or their official mobile app, 'IRCTC Rail Connect.'

Similarly, for bus bookings, prioritize using the official websites of the respective state transport corporations (such as UPSRTC or HRTC) or verified private travel portals within the country (such as RedBus, MakeMyTrip, or AbhiBus). Above all, never make the mistake—under any circumstances—of visiting a random website to share your personal details or payment information.

2. Always Strive to Avoid Fake Agents

During peak seasons—when waiting lists are prevalent everywhere—certain unauthorized agents may claim they can secure you a 100% confirmed ticket; however, this is merely another type of trap designed to ensnare unsuspecting individuals. In reality, these scammers typically charge you two to three times the actual price of a ticket and subsequently hand you a fake ticket—or one that has been edited (Photoshopped) to bear someone else's name.

On the other hand, according to railway regulations, traveling on a ticket issued in someone else's name is considered strictly illegal. Doing so can result in both imprisonment and the imposition of heavy fines. Always book your tickets exclusively through authorized IRCTC agents, and never forget to verify that they possess a valid ID.

3. Be Wary of Customer Care Numbers Found via Google Search

Very few of you may be aware that customer care numbers found through Google searches have become a common scam in this day and age. When people's tickets get completely cancelled or they fail to receive a refund, they often turn to Google to search for the 'IRCTC Customer Care Number.'

In reality, scammers frequently insert their fake contact numbers into Google search results. Consequently, when you call them, they pose as railway officials and trick you into downloading screen-sharing applications—such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer—onto your phone, thereby allowing them to very easily drain your entire bank account. Always bear in mind that you should obtain the helpline number for any company—including the railways—only by visiting their official website.

4. Steer Clear of Social Media and WhatsApp Offers

Furthermore, advertisements promising cheap tickets or the immediate availability of 'Tatkal' (urgent) tickets are currently being circulated rapidly among users via Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp groups. This represents a new modus operandi for fraudsters; the moment they receive the payment, they simply block your number.

5. Exercise Extra Caution When Making Payments

Always remember: you are *never* required to enter your UPI PIN in order to *receive* money. If anyone asks you to enter a PIN to receive a refund, immediately recognize that they are a scammer attempting to lure you into their trap.

Whenever you book a ticket, always use a secure payment gateway, and do not forget to look for "https://" in the URL.
