When traveling by train in India, people often think about carrying along heavy luggage, home-cooked meals, and essential items. Many travelers carry snacks, pickles, sweets, and even containers of ghee—especially when visiting their hometowns or relatives' homes—yet very few are aware that Indian Railways has established strict regulations regarding the transportation of certain items on trains. While most people know that carrying hazardous materials—such as petrol, diesel, firecrackers, acids, and explosives—is prohibited on trains, specific rules also exist for transporting oil-based substances like ghee, cooking oil, and paint—regulations that the general public is often unfamiliar with. These rules have been formulated to ensure passenger safety and to prevent any potential mishaps or inconveniences during the journey.

Interestingly, Indian Railways does permit passengers to carry ghee, albeit subject to specific conditions. Factors such as the permissible quantity, the method of packaging, and the manner in which it is stowed are all of significant importance. If these regulations are not strictly adhered to, passengers may encounter difficulties during security checks or while boarding the train.

Can You Carry Ghee on a Train?
According to Indian Railways' regulations, oil-based substances—such as cooking oil, paint, and ghee—are considered somewhat sensitive items, as any leakage could result in messiness within the coach and pose a safety risk. Nevertheless, passengers are permitted to carry ghee, provided they comply with certain stipulations. As per railway rules, a passenger may carry a maximum of 20 kilograms of ghee on a train; however, it is imperative that the ghee be securely sealed. It must be packed in a tin or a sturdy container, utilizing packaging robust enough to prevent any leakage during the journey. If the packaging is inadequate or if the quantity of ghee being transported exceeds the prescribed limit, railway officials reserve the right to prohibit the passenger from carrying it onto the train.

Why Have Rules Been Established for Carrying Ghee?
Many people often wonder why specific regulations exist even for everyday commodities such as ghee. The primary reasons for this are safety and hygiene. Substances such as oil or ghee can leak during the journey; the rapid movement of the train or shifting luggage can cause spills within the compartment, potentially damaging the belongings of other passengers. Furthermore, this can render the floor slippery—thereby increasing the risk of accidents—and, in some instances, may even pose a fire hazard.
