Indian Railways Rule: When traveling by train, if a passenger’s health suddenly deteriorates or, unfortunately, they pass away, a question often arises in people’s minds: is the train stopped immediately, or does it continue its journey?
Indian Railways Rule: Every day, millions of people travel by train across India. For some, the journey is comfortable, while for others, unfortunate incidents sometimes occur during the trip. If a person dies during the journey—whether due to deteriorating health or natural causes—many people wonder: is the train halted immediately, or does the journey proceed? Indian Railways has established specific protocols for such situations to ensure that the necessary legal procedures are completed correctly.
The Train is Stopped at the Next Nearest Station
It is important to note that if a passenger dies on a train, the TTE (Traveling Ticket Examiner) or the Guard is the first to be informed; however, the train is typically not stopped in the middle of the track. Instead, the train is halted at the next major station where medical facilities are available. All subsequent procedures are carried out at that location.
The GRP and Medical Team Handle the Matter
Upon reaching the station, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and a medical team arrive at the scene. First, a doctor officially confirms the death, after which the police complete the necessary legal formalities. If the death was due to natural causes—such as a heart attack or an illness—the police prepare a panchnama (official inquest report), and a post-mortem examination is conducted if deemed necessary. Once the deceased’s identity has been fully established, the body is handed over to their family members.
What Options Do Fellow Passengers Have?
If the deceased was traveling with family members, relatives, or friends, they may disembark at the station along with the body, while the remaining passengers continue their journey.
Does the Railway Provide Compensation?
This depends on the specific cause of death, such as:
- Compensation is provided if the death occurred as a result of a train accident.
- Compensation is also granted if negligence on the part of the railway authorities can be proven. Additionally, this applies if the passenger was insured.
- However, if the death occurred due to natural causes or an illness, no compensation is provided.
- You must have these 6 documents ready before filing your ITR; otherwise, your refund could get stuck.
How is the deceased’s body transported home?
If the family wishes to transport the body to their home, the Railways provides this facility.
The body can be sent via the parcel or luggage van service. To avail of this, you must possess the following essential documents:
- Death Certificate
- Police NOC (No Objection Certificate)
- Identity Proof
