New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso may soon have to make a significant decision regarding one of his key players.

As Alonso prepares to begin his tenure at Stamford Bridge, he inherits a side in need of improvement after another underwhelming Premier League campaign.

With the summer transfer window approaching, Chelsea are expected to be active once again as they aim to strengthen the squad. However, one of their standout performers from last season could be heading for an exit amid growing interest from one of Europe’s elite clubs.

Joao Pedro, who joined from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer, has impressed with 15 goals and five assists in the Premier League. His performances have not gone unnoticed across the continent.

According to reports from AS, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco held talks in London last week with Pedro’s agent to explore the possibility of a transfer to the Catalan giants.

The Brazilian forward is said to be enthusiastic about a potential move to Camp Nou, attracted by the chance to compete for domestic and European trophies under new manager Hansi Flick.

However, financial constraints currently make such a deal difficult for Barcelona, while Chelsea are reportedly reluctant to part ways with one of their most valuable attacking assets.

It is understood that Alonso will assess whether Pedro fits into his long-term plans at Chelsea. If the Spaniard feels the forward is not central to his project, the club could capitalise on his market value.

Pedro, aged 24, was signed for a package worth up to £60 million and remains under contract with Chelsea until 2033 — meaning any departure would command a substantial transfer fee.

Sources suggest Alonso may be open to letting Pedro leave if the player’s focus drifts away from the club, as the new head coach seeks a unified squad fully committed to his footballing philosophy.

During his brief spell at Real Madrid, Alonso reportedly faced challenges with dressing room dynamics and is keen to avoid similar issues in West London.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s primary target is believed to be Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, formerly of Manchester City. Yet, Los Colchoneros have made it clear they are unwilling to sell, forcing Barca to consider alternative options such as Pedro.

For now, Chelsea remain firm on their stance, but Alonso’s first big transfer decision could soon define the early stages of his managerial reign at the club.
