Carlo Ancelotti has included Neymar in his plans for the 2026 World Cup, but the experienced forward has been told to accept a considerably reduced role within the Brazil camp. The Italian manager held a crucial video meeting with the Santos legend to set out clear expectations before finalising his 26-player squad.
Conditions for Neymar’s return
Neymar’s selection for Brazil’s World Cup squad was far from certain until an important video call took place last Thursday. According to Globo, Ancelotti, along with technical director Rodrigo Caetano, spoke directly with the 34-year-old to explain the new structure of the national team. During the conversation, the coach made it clear that the days of Neymar being the automatic leader and star of the side were over.
The former Real Madrid coach informed Neymar that he would no longer serve as captain and would not be guaranteed a place in the starting lineup. Ancelotti explained that he already has a core starting XI in mind and, at present, Neymar is not part of that group.
In addition, a strict new code of conduct was introduced, which included a specific request for Neymar to limit his social media activity in order to remain focused on the tournament.
Ancelotti defends his decision
Despite the firm stance taken in private, Ancelotti has publicly defended his decision to call up the veteran forward, highlighting his experience as a crucial influence on the younger players in the squad.
The coach believes Neymar’s presence in the dressing room can have a positive impact, even if his on-field contributions are limited to short appearances or key moments coming off the bench.
“He has improved his fitness,” Ancelotti said. “He will be an important player in this World Cup. He knows how to handle this kind of competition, and he has the affection of the team; he can help create a better atmosphere in the group.”
“We didn’t select Neymar because we see him as just a substitute. We picked him because we believe he can make a difference — whether that’s for one minute, five minutes, ninety minutes, or even in a penalty situation.”
A shift in attitude
Neymar’s response was reportedly very positive. The forward welcomed the unexpected call with a smile and assured the coach that he would do whatever it takes to support the team. This willingness to accept a supporting role convinced Ancelotti to include him, marking his first call-up since the Italian took charge of the national team in 2025.
After the official squad announcement, Neymar is said to have sent a message of thanks and celebration to the coaching staff, filled with green and yellow heart emojis to express his gratitude and national pride.
Brazil’s road to the World Cup
With Neymar now reintegrated into the squad, Brazil have turned their attention to final preparations in Teresopolis. The players will assemble at Granja Comary on May 27 before facing Panama in a farewell friendly at the Maracana on May 31 — the last opportunity for fans to see the team play at home before their departure to the United States on June 1.
Brazil will then meet Egypt in a final warm-up game in Cleveland on June 6, before opening their World Cup campaign against Morocco in New Jersey on June 13.
