Robert Lewandowski encouraged to consider ambitious Wrexham for his next move

Wrexham’s celebrated owners, their readiness to invest, and the club’s rapid rise through the leagues have inevitably led to some rather bold transfer speculation.

The Red Dragons, who narrowly missed out on a Championship playoff spot after achieving three consecutive promotions, now have their eyes set firmly on reaching the Premier League.

While players such as Kieffer Moore, Josh Windass, and Sam Smith have provided a consistent goal threat in the second tier, questions are being raised over whether Wrexham could attract a marquee striker to spearhead their attack next season.

Former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta has suggested that signing Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski could be a mutually beneficial move for both the player and the club.

The renowned Polish striker, who has enjoyed an impressive career with Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona, will see his contract expire at the end of the current season.

Lewandowski captured his first of two The Best FIFA Men's Player awards in 2020, finishing ahead of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Interestingly, during that same period, Wrexham’s attacking lineup featured Jordan Ponticelli, Kwame Thomas, Gold Omotayo, and Dior Angus.

It is quite remarkable, then, that the idea of Lewandowski joining Wrexham is being discussed at all — even if such a move remains highly improbable.

Speaking to PlayUK, Mendieta remarked, “Robert Lewandowski should sign for Wrexham — but he might find the Championship a difficult challenge.”

He continued, “Robert Lewandowski has said he’s open to stepping down a level, and if he’s thinking about acting after retirement, then Wrexham would be the perfect place for him!”

“He’s looking for his next chapter. If he wants to keep playing, there are definitely opportunities out there. I’m just not certain about the competitiveness of the league or the category.”

Mendieta added, “These types of players don’t always flourish in leagues like the Championship or Spain’s Segunda Division — they’re incredibly demanding environments.”

“Still, his quality and skill set can add real value. He definitely won’t be short of offers, so we’ll just have to wait and see. But it would be a thrilling prospect.”

At 37 years old, Lewandowski may still harbour ambitions of competing at the highest level, but perhaps the glamour of Hollywood — or even the charm of north Wales — could tempt him into an unexpected adventure.
