Manchester City’s star striker Khadija Shaw has been honoured with the Women’s Super League Player of the Season award following a remarkable domestic campaign. The Jamaican international also bagged the Golden Boot, scoring 21 goals in 22 matches, playing a pivotal role in guiding City to their first league title in a decade.

Shaw’s recognition

The 29-year-old forward delivered another outstanding season, finishing as the top scorer in the league for the third consecutive year and propelling City to championship glory. Her dazzling performances also earned her the Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year award earlier in May. However, off the field, contract extension talks have stalled, fuelling speculation about a possible summer move to Chelsea once her contract concludes in June.

Casparij’s tribute

As Shaw opted not to attend the award ceremony in London, Manchester City’s vice-captain Kerstin Casparij accepted the trophy on her behalf. Reflecting on Shaw’s influence during the team’s homecoming celebrations—where fans passionately urged her to stay at the Etihad—Casparij remarked, “She’s a goalscorer, an incredible person and has been such fun to play alongside. I owe many of my assists to her because she’s been there to finish them off. She’s truly amazing.”

Other award recipients

Shaw triumphed over international stars Alessia Russo and Kirsty Hanson to claim the top individual honour, as several other awards were also distributed across the WSL. Chelsea shot-stopper Hannah Hampton won the Golden Glove, Veerle Buurman was named Rising Star, and Hanson clinched the Goal of the Season. In the second division, Birmingham City’s Lily Crosthwaite took home the Player of the Season title, while Sophie Whitehouse’s Golden Glove performance powered Charlton Athletic to the promotion play-offs.

City eye domestic double

Manchester City now have one more major challenge ahead—the Women’s FA Cup final against Brighton on May 31. With their current momentum and strong form, Gareth Taylor’s side have the chance to secure a historic domestic double, potentially providing the perfect finale to Shaw’s time at the club.
