Liverpool’s planned signing of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace has broken down on the final day of the transfer window, according to multiple reports.

Guehi was on the verge of completing a £35 million switch to Anfield, with only one year left on his current contract. However, journalist David Ornstein revealed that the deal collapsed at the last moment, resulting in the England defender remaining at Selhurst Park. Although Liverpool had reportedly submitted the necessary transfer documents before the 7 p.m. deadline, Crystal Palace withdrew their approval just before the window closed.

Sources indicate that Guehi had already gone through parts of his medical and agreed personal terms on a five-year contract that would have kept him at Liverpool until 2030. Nonetheless, Palace head coach Oliver Glasner was unwilling to let his captain leave without securing an adequate replacement. After the South London club failed in their attempt to sign Brighton’s Igor Julio, despite bringing in Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse earlier in the window, the move was ultimately vetoed.

Since joining Crystal Palace from Chelsea in 2021, Guehi has been an indispensable figure for the Eagles, making 155 appearances. He led the club to their historic first FA Cup victory last season, when they defeated Manchester City in the final at Wembley. On the international front, Guehi has earned 23 caps for England and was a key part of their journey to the Euro 2024 final.

Looking ahead, Guehi’s contract situation presents a pressing issue for Crystal Palace. His current deal runs until 2026, leaving the club with the choice of negotiating a new extension soon or risking losing him for a lower fee in January, or even for free next summer. For Liverpool, the collapse of this deal means they will have to revisit their defensive targets before the January transfer window. In the meantime, Guehi is expected to continue playing a pivotal role under Glasner as Palace embark on their Europa Conference League campaign.
