Manchester United await Barcelona’s final call on Marcus Rashford as deadline approaches

The England striker has spent the current season on loan at Barcelona, with the Spanish club holding an option to make the deal permanent.

Marcus Rashford’s long-term future remains uncertain as Barcelona approach the deadline to decide whether they wish to keep him beyond this season.

The Manchester United forward joined Aston Villa on loan for the second half of last season after losing his place under then-manager Ruben Amorim. Last summer, he chose to move abroad, signing a season-long loan agreement with Barcelona.

Rashford has been a regular feature for the Catalan side this season, though he has mostly come off the bench in recent months. Despite some inconsistency, he has delivered ten goals and 13 assists across 39 appearances in all competitions — a solid contribution overall.

That loan agreement reportedly includes a clause allowing Barcelona to make the transfer permanent for a fee of €30 million (£26.2 million).

Manchester United, however, are said to be firm on that valuation and unwilling to renegotiate, effectively leaving Barcelona with a ‘take it or leave it’ choice.

According to ESPN’s Spanish outlet, Barcelona must make their final decision on Rashford by June 15.

At this stage, there is no clear indication that the La Liga giants will trigger the permanent clause. Newly re-elected club president Joan Laporta, who officially resumes his duties on July 1, has suggested that the club might instead explore the option of extending Rashford’s loan spell.

Speaking to Jijantes last month, Laporta said: “We could extend the loan further; it depends on what [sporting director] Deco wants. There are possibilities — we could include part of the purchase option with United and then see what happens next. We are currently evaluating the deal.”

If Barcelona decide against keeping Rashford, he will return to Manchester United, where his situation remains unclear.

The 26-year-old England international is under contract with United until the summer of 2028 and could get a fresh start under a new manager, having previously struggled to impress Erik ten Hag before Ruben Amorim’s tenure.

However, Rashford is believed to be the club’s highest-paid player, and if the management feels those wages could be better allocated elsewhere, he may once again face an uphill task to reclaim a consistent role in the starting lineup.
