Kenny Miller: Lawrence Shankland’s spot remains the most uncertain as young strikers compete for places in Steve Clarke’s 2026 World Cup squad

Former striker Kenny Miller has analysed Steve Clarke’s attacking options as Scotland prepare for the 2026 World Cup.

Scottish supporters are still celebrating their nation’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup, achieved in thrilling style with a 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden Park last November.

However, the real challenge now begins for Scotland manager Steve Clarke, who must finalise a squad capable of competing with group stage opponents Haiti, Morocco and Brazil when the tournament begins in June.

One of Clarke’s key decisions will be determining his first-choice centre-forward, given the depth of options available. To shed light on the situation, FourFourTwo spoke to Scotland legend Kenny Miller for his take on who should lead the line.

“You’ve got Che Adams, Lyndon Dykes and Lawrence Shankland as the main trio,” said Miller, who netted 18 goals in 69 appearances for Scotland, speaking to FFT on behalf of the Premier League betting platform BetWright.

“I think with George Hirst, Kieron Bowie and Tommy Conway coming in as well, we’ve now got a few more options than before.

“So potentially, you’re looking at six players fighting for three or four spots. I’m not sure what the final squad size will be or how many strikers Steve Clarke plans to take. But I can’t imagine Dykes and Adams missing out on that plane.”

“I’m a big admirer of Shankland too. He’s definitely the most prolific among them. He’s been in and around the squad for a few years, though not always consistently, so I’d say his position is probably the one most open for competition. But Conway and Hirst will be eager to make that trip as well.”

With such a wealth of attacking talent available, Clarke’s decision on who to include in his final selection is unlikely to be a straightforward one.
