The Tripura government has cancelled the 26-day summer vacation across all government colleges, technical institutions, and vocational institutes in the state. An official stated on Friday that these holidays were scheduled to begin on May 25 but will not be granted.
In a notification, Animesh Debbarma, Director of Higher Education, stated, "In the interest of the students, the 26-day summer vacation, scheduled to commence on May 26, is hereby cancelled for all colleges, technical institutions, and vocational institutes functioning under the department."
The notification clarifies that colleges will not remain closed during this period; instead, they will remain open. During this time, admissions for the 2026-27 academic session, semester examinations, and all administrative operations will continue as usual.
Why were the holidays cancelled?
The notification further adds, "Since colleges will remain open and academic as well as administrative activities will be conducted during the summer vacation, teachers and staff employed in these colleges shall be entitled to 26 days of earned leave."
According to Debbarma, the state government has already implemented the National Education Policy (NEP). Consequently, academic instruction is now being conducted under a semester system, which has significantly reduced both the necessity and scope for extended summer vacations.
"This is a primary reason for the cancellation of the summer vacation," he said. He further noted that there are currently 22 state-run general degree colleges in Tripura.
