Mikel Arteta has urged his Arsenal squad to etch their names into football history by completing a remarkable double, following their Premier League triumph. The manager emphasised that his players are brimming with “incredible energy” and unstoppable momentum as they gear up for their Champions League final clash against Paris Saint-Germain.
Arteta eyes historic double in Budapest
Arsenal secured the Premier League title after a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in their final domestic fixture of the season. The celebrations were a landmark moment for the club, yet Arteta has already shifted focus to the upcoming Champions League final against PSG on Saturday, urging his players to maintain their intensity.
The Spanish coach is determined to ensure that the euphoria of their league success does not affect the team’s focus. “We need that energy to flow, and going against that, I think it will be a big mistake,” Arteta said. “We’ve already spoken about what we have to do in Budapest, how we’re going to channel all the incredible energy we’re carrying into that final, and tomorrow we’ll begin our preparations.”
A new chapter for the Gunners
Winning the Premier League is a monumental feat for a team that had finished runners-up for three straight seasons. However, the Champions League remains the ultimate goal. Arsenal have never claimed Europe’s most prestigious club trophy, and Arteta recognises the chance to carve this squad’s name into the club’s legacy.
“We can’t wait to write a new chapter in the history of our club and lift the Champions League,” Arteta declared, highlighting his ambition to secure a unique domestic and European double.
Raising the standards at the Emirates
Since taking over in 2020 and winning the FA Cup in his first season, Arteta has experienced both progress and setbacks before reaching this high point. He believes that holding the “champion” title will provide a mental edge crucial for the team’s performance under the spotlight in Budapest.
“I told the boys that this shirt now represents something different,” Arteta explained. “We are the champions, and that brings confidence, presence, and energy. But it also brings responsibility. My task now, along with everyone at the club, is to raise those standards even higher and achieve more, because I truly believe we can.”
Relief and redemption for Arteta
After enduring narrow misses in previous seasons, Arteta’s joy and relief were evident as he celebrated the title on the pitch with his family. Having visualised moments like this, the manager admitted that seeing it come true validated his approach.
“I’m the same person, but happier and relieved,” Arteta admitted. “Throughout this journey, we’ve taken massive steps. We’ve achieved so many things that hold great value in my eyes. But ultimately, we’re here to win major trophies—that’s always been the goal. We came close several times and fell short in the final stages, which was painful. But that pain pushed us to find new ways to prove our strength. The way we’ve done it this time makes it even more special.”
