AC Milan have officially dismissed head coach Massimiliano Allegri following a disappointing end to their Serie A season. The club’s hierarchy moved quickly on Monday after their failure to qualify for the Champions League was confirmed on the final matchday. Reports suggest that Allegri is now expected to take charge of Napoli, succeeding Antonio Conte.
Major changes underway at Milan
In a bold move that has stunned Italian football circles, AC Milan owners RedBird Capital have initiated a sweeping overhaul of the club’s leadership structure. Along with Allegri’s removal, the club also announced the departures of chief executive officer Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada, effectively dismantling the entire sporting management team.
This decision came after a dramatic final day in Serie A, where Milan’s 2-1 defeat to Cagliari left them finishing fifth in the table. As a consequence, the Rossoneri will feature in the Europa League next season. It marks a significant setback for the club, which had previously enjoyed four consecutive years of Champions League qualification but has now missed out for the second straight campaign.
Club ownership brands the season a complete failure
The club’s owners did not mince words in their evaluation of what they described as a season that started with high expectations but ended in disappointment. Despite spending much of the season among the top two positions, Milan’s collapse in the closing stages proved costly for Allegri and his management team. The frustration was clear in an official statement issued by the club after failing to secure a Champions League spot and settling for Europa League participation.
“After the disappointment of last year, the mandate ownership set for the club was to return to the Champions League and to establish a foundation for winning consistently at the top of Serie A,” the statement read. “For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A, with a credible shot at competing for the Scudetto. The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night’s disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure.”
End of Allegri’s second tenure
Allegri’s second spell at San Siro was aimed at reviving Milan’s former dominance, reminiscent of his earlier success between 2010 and 2014 when he guided the club to a Scudetto triumph. However, the 58-year-old from Livorno could not reproduce those heights, lasting only a single season in his return to the Milan bench.
The decisive blow came when Milan were overtaken by Como, who crushed Cremonese 4-1 to move above the Rossoneri in the final standings. For Allegri—a manager with five Scudetti and five Coppa Italia titles from his illustrious Juventus tenure—this outcome stands as a rare blemish on an otherwise stellar career.
Future uncertain as Milan plan a fresh start
With the entire sporting department now vacant, Milan face a crucial summer of rebuilding. The simultaneous exits of Furlani, Tare, and Moncada alongside Allegri indicate that RedBird Capital is seeking a complete reset, both culturally and operationally, to align the club’s ambitions with its on-field results.
The club wrapped up its statement saying: “Further announcements regarding new appointments will be communicated as soon as they are finalised, with the goal of having a structure ready ahead of the next season.”
