There is a sense of relief following the recent injury scare as goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger has been named in the German women’s national football team for their crucial World Cup qualifying fixtures.
The 35-year-old’s inclusion had been uncertain after she sustained an abdominal injury while representing her US club, Gotham FC.
National coach Christian Wück provided an update on Tuesday, saying, “We’ve received positive initial feedback. She spent one night in the hospital, but there’s no structural damage. She’s still experiencing some pain but expects to feel better in the next few days. We believe it should be fine—but we do have a Plan B ready if needed.”
Stina Johannes from VfL Wolfsburg and Ena Mahmutovic from Bayern Munich have been called up as reserve goalkeepers. However, Wück has not yet indicated which of the two would step in first if Berger is unable to play.
The DFB women’s team—missing Giulia Gwinn—are determined to top their World Cup qualifying group. “Our target is clear: we want to finish first in this group,” said Wück.
As anticipated, Germany will be without their captain Giulia Gwinn for the upcoming matches against Norway and Slovenia on 5 and 9 June. The Bayern Munich right-back is still recovering from shoulder surgery. Forward Nicole Anyomi will also miss out due to injury, while central defender Janina Minge will be suspended for the Norway clash.
On a positive note, Klara Bühl, Sophia Kleinherne, Kathrin Hendrich, and Marie Müller have all returned from injury. Melissa Kössler of Denver Summit FC, who last played for Germany in 2024, also makes a comeback to the national squad after a long absence.
A win at home against Norway in Cologne (kick-off 8:35 pm CEST, ARD) would secure early qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. Germany currently lead Group A4 by just one point following their goalless draw against Austria. Four days later, they will face Slovenia in Ljubljana (6:00 pm/ZDF).
“Our goal is straightforward: to finish top of the group and earn direct qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil,” Wück added. “We will approach the upcoming games with full commitment, focus, and team spirit. The injuries are unfortunate, but we believe others will rise to the occasion. We have immense trust in this team—every player knows what’s at stake, and we’re ready to secure our World Cup berth.”
