Wrexham may have just wrapped up what many consider the finest season in their 162-year existence, but owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney now face a challenge unlike any they've encountered since taking charge at the Racecourse Ground. Despite narrowly missing out on the Championship play-offs by only two points, the Red Dragons are now victims of their own success, with rival clubs eyeing their top performers.
The price of success in the Championship
For the first time since the Hollywood duo took over, Wrexham head into the summer transfer window uncertain about their ability to hold on to their key players. While outside interest has been a recurring theme throughout their remarkable rise through the English football pyramid, the club is now competing at a level where Premier League and European sides can lure talent with lucrative contracts and grander stages.
Manager Phil Parkinson has openly acknowledged the need to strengthen the squad, admitting that "Wrexham must improve its squad" to handle what is expected to be an extremely competitive Championship season ahead.
With recently relegated Premier League teams like Wolves, Burnley, and West Ham entering the league with substantial parachute funds, the Welsh outfit will need to not only bring in quality additions but also protect their existing stars from being poached.
The Callum Doyle situation
Central to Wrexham’s defensive success this season has been Callum Doyle. The 22-year-old, signed from Manchester City, delivered an outstanding campaign that saw him sweep multiple end-of-season honours, including Young Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season. His stellar performances also earned him a place in the Championship Team of the Season, naturally sparking interest from several Premier League clubs.
After the final day’s draw with Middlesbrough, captain Dom Hyam conceded that keeping Doyle might be difficult this summer. He said, “He’s an incredibly talented player. He’s got everything — technically composed, physically strong, and still very young. Unfortunately, that will attract some big clubs. It’s beyond our control, but his future is definitely bright.”
Rangers keep tabs on Josh Windass
It’s not only the younger players drawing attention. Veteran forward Josh Windass has also become a subject of speculation after a stellar season that saw him score 17 goals and provide six assists across all competitions. His performances earned him the club’s Player of the Season award.
Reports suggest that Scottish giants Rangers, currently managed by his former Sheffield Wednesday coach Danny Rohl, are interested in reuniting with the 32-year-old striker.
Windass joined Wrexham on a free transfer last summer, meaning any future sale would represent “pure profit” for the club. However, losing such an experienced player and key goal contributor would be a significant setback for Parkinson’s plans. Although there has been “nothing to report” yet about a formal approach from Ibrox, the potential reunion between Windass and Rohl continues to generate speculation.
Handling the potential transfer departures
The transfer interest doesn’t end with Doyle and Windass. Midfielder Lewis O’Brien, who joined from Nottingham Forest in 2025, is also being linked with a move to Hull City. With the Tigers expected to have their transfer embargo lifted next month, Wrexham could face a tough decision if an offer comes that allows them to recover their investment or even turn a profit on the 27-year-old.
