In India, the scorching heat from April to the last weeks of May has increased the problems of the people. The temperature in the plains of North India is continuously increasing and reaching above 45 degrees Celsius. The effect of hot winds and heat wave is clearly visible in many districts from Rajasthan to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Weather Update: The weather in India is currently visible in two different forms. North and North-West India are in the grip of scorching heat and heat wave, while rain and strong winds in the South, East and North-Eastern states have brought some relief to the weather. Meanwhile, changes in meteorologists’ estimates regarding the speed of monsoon and its arrival have intensified the discussion.

According to the latest update of the India Meteorological Department, the monsoon is likely to reach the Kerala coast around the usual date of June 1, but this time it is expected to reach between June 2 and 4.

Slow pace of monsoon: What was the reason?

According to weather experts, several atmospheric and oceanic conditions are responsible for the slight delay in the progress of monsoon this time. The most prominent among these is the El Niño-like situation developing in the Pacific Ocean, which has affected global weather patterns.

What is El Niño?

El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon in which marine waters in the eastern and central part of the equatorial Pacific Ocean become unusually warm. This condition affects global winds and rainfall patterns.

    • Global temperature rise due to rising sea temperatures
    • Extreme heat and humidity in many areas
    • Heavy rain and floods in some parts
    • Drought and lack of rainfall in other areas

Scientists say strong El Niño years may weaken the monsoon, although the impact on the Indian monsoon is not always uniform.

Current weather conditions in India

Temperatures have reached 44 to 46 degrees Celsius in Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and many parts of Central India. Heat wave conditions persist in many areas.

    • Yellow alert issued in Delhi-NCR
    • Strong hot winds during the day (20–40 km/h)
    • Chance of thunderstorm and light rain in the evening
    • West India: Humidity and partial rain

The weather is hot and humid in Mumbai, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa. However, there is a possibility of light rain and thundershowers in the evening or night.

South India: Rain and strong winds

Rain and thunderstorms continue in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Yellow alert has also been issued in some districts in Kerala. There is a warning of heavy rain and strong winds in the northeastern states including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh. It is raining with thunder and lightning in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal also.

According to the Meteorological Department, the progress of monsoon is currently slow in the Bay of Bengal and southern parts of the Arabian Sea. However, if conditions become favorable in the next few days, it may gain momentum. Experts believe that this slight delay in monsoon is not an unusual situation, but it definitely indicates the changing climate pattern.
