Arsene Wenger explains what Arsenal lack and predicts Champions League glory under Mikel Arteta

Legendary former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has expressed his belief that the Gunners are ready to finally win the UEFA Champions League, describing the prestigious trophy as the only major accolade missing from the club’s collection at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal, who have never lifted a European title, will have the opportunity to change that on Saturday evening—just a week after being crowned Premier League champions.

Wenger, currently serving as FIFA’s Head of Global Football Development, was on the touchline during Arsenal’s only previous Champions League final appearance in 2006, when his side were narrowly defeated by Barcelona.

The Frenchman is optimistic that current manager Mikel Arteta can succeed where he fell short. “I want this trophy to go to the Emirates because it’s missing there,” Wenger said in an interview with UEFA. “We came so close before — we were thirteen minutes away from winning it — so I hope this time it finally happens.”

Reflecting on Arsenal’s evolution, Wenger added: “I’ve always believed that when you work at a club, your goal is to leave it in a strong position to continue progressing. I think this is the stage where Arsenal can truly achieve it. The final feels fifty-fifty, but if I had to place a bet, I would back Arsenal over Paris Saint-Germain.”

He continued: “The club deserves it, the season deserves it, and the consistency of this team deserves it. Over time, Arsenal have built a history strong enough to win the Champions League. I also think the time has come for them to consistently dominate the Premier League.”

Throughout the season, Arsenal’s mentality was often questioned as they faced intense pressure from Manchester City in the title race. Wenger hopes Arteta’s men can stay calm and focused in Budapest. “A final is always special,” Wenger remarked. “The key is that your players don’t get overwhelmed by the occasion and continue focusing on what they do best.”

Wenger, who once managed Arteta as a player, praised the team’s key strengths. “This Arsenal side’s main advantage is their ability to keep clean sheets, and that’s crucial in a final,” he explained. “You must also be efficient — your chance will come, and when it does, you need to be ruthless. I’ve been part of many finals, and it’s always about showing your quality and not letting the occasion get to you.”

Comparing the two finalists, Wenger said: “Paris Saint-Germain possess immense attacking power, but Arsenal have individual brilliance and are very strong on set pieces, which can make a huge difference in a final. Once you’re 1–0 up, the game plays to your strengths if you’re defensively solid. Arsenal can always be dangerous.”

Wenger concluded by offering a message to his former player and now Arsenal boss. “Do what you usually do and try to stay calm, even though that’s never easy,” he advised. “Instil belief in your players — he knows exactly how to do that. He understands his squad better than anyone. Maintain the togetherness that has carried the team all season, and that will be enough.”
