Atletico Madrid are reportedly planning a comprehensive squad overhaul this summer under the supervision of sporting director Mateu Alemany. The Spanish heavyweights are said to be open to offloading star forward Julian Alvarez if a record-breaking offer is received, with the proceeds intended to fund ambitious pursuits of top targets Bernardo Silva and Cristian Romero as part of Diego Simeone’s restructuring efforts following Antoine Griezmann’s exit.

Atletico Madrid’s preparations for a monumental transfer window are already underway. As per reports from AS, the club is seeking to bounce back from a difficult campaign that concluded with a 5-1 loss to Villarreal, leaving them in fourth place in La Liga and out of the Champions League after a semi-final defeat. Alemany now faces the challenge of replacing Griezmann, who is set to join MLS, while rejuvenating a squad that appeared fatigued towards the end of the season.

Alvarez, who arrived at Atletico in 2024 for €75 million, was initially seen as the focal point of the team’s future project. Despite netting 49 goals in 106 appearances, including 20 this season, the Argentine forward has yet to lift any silverware since his move to Madrid.

The possible departure of the World Cup winner is expected to spark intense activity in the transfer market. Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, and Arsenal are all monitoring his situation closely. PSG, fresh from their Champions League triumph, regard Alvarez as a perfect marquee signing to bolster their star-studded lineup and are preparing for another major final clash against Arsenal on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Barcelona see Alvarez as a potential long-term successor in attack after Robert Lewandowski’s departure. However, the Catalan side’s ongoing financial troubles could hinder any move for the Argentine forward.

Should Atletico decide to sell Alvarez, whose contract runs until 2030, the transfer fee would likely need to exceed €100 million. Such a windfall would enable Alemany to chase high-profile reinforcements, including Silva, who is set to leave Manchester City after winning all major trophies, and Tottenham Hotspur defender Romero.

Bringing Romero on board would significantly strengthen Atletico’s backline, providing much-needed leadership after the defender’s pivotal role in helping Spurs narrowly avoid relegation on the final day of the Premier League season. The club is also eyeing Joao Gomes and Marc Cucurella as potential additions, signalling a major squad revamp on the horizon.

Addressing the growing speculation around his players, manager Diego Simeone commented: “He is mature enough to know what he wants to do, and I believe he already has made up his mind.”

Atletico Madrid now face a crucial summer under their new Apollo ownership, where transfer spending will largely depend on funds generated through player sales. Alemany is expected to work relentlessly in the coming weeks to finalise exits and secure key signings. Supporters can anticipate a significantly altered starting lineup when the team reconvenes for pre-season, as Atletico aim to usher in a new and competitive chapter in their history.
