Terminal 2 will eventually host 15 airlines, most of them low-cost carriers, including AirAsia, IndiGo, Bangkok Airways, Cebu Pacific, Hainan Airlines and Cambodia Airways, Bloomberg reported.
The move is expected to ease congestion at Terminal 1 and create more room for full-service operators such as Cathay Pacific, the South China Morning Post reported.
The expansion comes as competition intensifies among major Asian and Middle Eastern transit hubs.
According to aviation data provider OAG, Hong Kong ranked as the world’s eighth-busiest international airport in 2025 with 38.7 million seats, trailing Dubai International Airport at 62.4 million and Singapore Changi Airport at 42.6 million.
“Terminal 2 is really important for HKIA because it provides extra capacity for us to grow,” Steven Yiu, the airport’s executive director of airport operations, said during a media briefing ahead of the launch.
Officials described the new facility as one of the world’s most technologically advanced airport terminals, with operations heavily reliant on automation, artificial intelligence and facial recognition systems.
The terminal is designed to handle up to 30 million passengers annually and features 58 self-service check-in kiosks, 68 automated bag-drop counters and 108 traditional check-in desks.
