Its inspiration comes from old films and my ancestral home in Patna. The stairs have floral carvings, which further adds to the Victorian charm of the entire penthouse.

This house tells the story of Shekhar Suman’s hard work and journey. He said, ‘When I first came to Mumbai, I had only a broken bicycle. Today, this beautiful house built with hard work gives me stability and satisfaction. The walls are decorated with beautiful paintings and antiques brought from all over the world. One painting shows an English couple dancing, which he bought from an antiques specialist boutique in New York. A striking purple vase reminds of a trip to San Diego. The most unique thing in the house is the handmade glass ‘Tree Life’ artwork. It took the artisans two years to make it.

The family’s private study room is on the 19th floor. Yes there are elegant sofas and comfortable decor. Shekhar says, ‘We spend a lot of time there. There is privacy and there is no disturbance, so all the important things and discussions happen there. A separate corner has been created for son Suman’s studies. It’s a place with brown wooden furniture and plain white walls. There is also a stylish bar setup with decanters, bar stools and nice bar accessories. Shekhar explains, ‘This is a study corner. He calls his friends here. Sometimes we hold parties for up to 150 guests in this house.

Shekhar is very fond of old things. The house contains items taken from the auction of the chapel and beautiful old antiques like a classic grandfather clock. He said, ‘I love antiques. We have decorated everything in a traditional and classic way. It is surprising to see their white kitchen. Shekhar says, ‘I wanted to keep the kitchen completely white.’ The dining room is also decorated in white and ivory colours. There is a big chandelier here and an open view of the sea.
