India’s tough stance for the first time in 65 years

between india and pakistan indus water treaty There has been tension regarding this for more than a year. In fact, after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in April 2025, India had taken a historic decision to suspend this treaty that had been in place since 1960.

This is the first time in its 65 years of history that India has put a hold on this agreement. After this step of India, Pakistan is continuously alleging that India is ruining the agriculture of its Punjab province by stopping the flow of water.

Pakistani expert’s sensational claim

Amidst this controversy, Pakistan hydrology And water resources expert Hasan Abbas, in an article, has raised questions on the relevance of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT). He has described this treaty as completely in favor of India.

Abbas argues that Pakistan gained nothing from this treaty and now it has nothing left to lose. According to him, the foundation of this treaty signed in 1960 was based on India’s privileges.

Mathematics of Eastern and Western Rivers

Hassan Abbas alleged that India always had full rights over the eastern rivers like Ravi, Beas and Sutlej and Pakistan’s share in it was nil. At the same time, it was a geographical compulsion of India to transfer the western rivers (Indus, Jhelum and Chenab) to Pakistan, because these rivers pass through high mountains where it was not practically possible to divert or store water.

Subsequently, the treaty gave India ‘unlimited rights’ to build hydropower projects on these rivers. Gave. The expert further said that India kept every drop it was able to divert and Pakistan got only that water which India could not divert.

Berlin Rules and Treaty Exit Advice

Pakistani expert has advised Islamabad that it should exit this treaty. He believes that even if there is no treaty, Pakistan will continue to get the same water which it is getting now due to its geographical position.

He suggested that Pakistan should abide by the ‘Berlin Rules 2024’ We should take recourse to and present our stand on international forums on the basis of environment and human rights. At the same time, he also made baseless allegations against India of spreading pollution in rivers, which he considers as a basis for withdrawing from the treaty.
