The government’s NMMSS scholarship scheme is proving to be a significant source of relief for underprivileged yet meritorious students. Under this scheme, financial assistance of ₹12,000 is provided annually to students from Class 9 through Class 12.
Even today, there are millions of children across the country who, despite excelling academically, are forced to drop out of school midway due to financial hardships. This is particularly true in villages and small towns, where many families are unable to fund their children’s education beyond the 8th grade. However, a special government initiative has now emerged as a beacon of hope for such promising students. This scheme is known as the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS).
This Central Government scheme has been launched specifically for students who are academically bright but come from families with weak financial backgrounds. Through this scholarship, the government provides annual financial aid to students, enabling them to pursue their education without any interruptions.
Receiving ₹1,000 Every Month
Students selected under the NMMSS scheme are awarded an annual scholarship of ₹12,000. This translates to a monthly assistance of ₹1,000, which is deposited directly into the student’s bank account. This financial support is provided from Class 9 up to Class 12. Consequently, a single student can avail the benefits of this scheme for a maximum duration of four years. The government’s objective is clear: to ensure that a lack of funds never stands in the way of a child’s education.
Which Students Are Eligible for the Benefit?
Students studying in government schools, government-aided schools, or local body schools are eligible for this scheme. Conversely, students attending certain specific types of schools are not considered eligible. This includes students enrolled in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, Kendriya Vidyalayas, and private residential schools.
What are the Minimum Marks Required?
The government has also laid down specific academic criteria for this scheme. Students are required to have secured a minimum of 55% marks in Class 7. A relaxation of 5% is granted to students belonging to the SC (Scheduled Caste) and ST (Scheduled Tribe) categories. This initiative ensures that hardworking and meritorious children are given the opportunity to advance in their academic journey.
What should the family income be?
The benefits of this scheme are available only to families with a weak economic background. The total annual income of the student’s parents must not exceed ₹3.5 lakh. Submission of an Income Certificate is mandatory at the time of application.
Here are the required documents:
Marksheet
Income Certificate
Aadhaar Card
Bank Account Details
School Certificate
How is the selection made?
To qualify for the NMMSS scholarship, students are required to appear for an examination. This examination is conducted at the state level and typically takes place in the month of November. It consists of questions related to academic subjects. Students who perform well in this examination are selected for the scholarship.
