Anthony Gordon has officially completed his move from Newcastle United to Barcelona, marking one of the most notable transfers in Spanish football this summer.

The Newcastle United forward has signed a five-year contract with Barcelona, as announced by the Catalan giants. However, the club did not disclose the transfer fee when confirming the arrival of the 25-year-old striker.

Reports suggest the transfer is valued at around €69.3 million, giving Newcastle a substantial profit compared to the €45 million they paid Everton for his services in January 2023.

In an official statement, Barcelona said: “FC Barcelona and Newcastle United have reached an agreement for Anthony Gordon to become part of the Blaugrana for the next five seasons.”

Bayern Munich was among several clubs interested in signing Gordon, but it was Barcelona — who faced him three times in last season’s Champions League — that succeeded in sealing the deal.

The forward still had four years remaining on the long-term contract he signed with Newcastle in 2024. He will now turn his attention to England’s World Cup campaign before beginning an exciting new chapter in his career.

Newcastle had heavily invested in Gordon as head coach Eddie Howe aimed to inject greater dynamism into his attack. His partnership with Alexander Isak, who joined Liverpool in a controversial summer move last year, was a key factor in the team’s resurgence.

Gordon played a pivotal role as Newcastle ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by winning the Carabao Cup final last season, also securing a second-place finish in the Champions League for the third consecutive campaign.

Gordon’s 10 goals in European competition this season have further showcased his talent, even though five of them came from penalties. Now, he will have the opportunity to prove himself in La Liga and beyond.

Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds the future of Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford, whose permanent transfer clause at Barcelona expires next month following Gordon’s arrival.

Julian Alvarez Opens the Door for a Barcelona Move, but Atletico Madrid Demand €150 Million

Despite being under contract until 2030 with a release clause close to €500 million, Julian Alvarez’s situation at Atletico Madrid has grown increasingly tense following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season.

The Atletico management has been working to extend the Argentine striker’s contract amid strong interest from Barcelona and PSG. They initially believed the renewal process was under control, but months of silence from Alvarez’s camp have changed the outlook.

Julian Alvarez open to leaving

Alvarez’s priority is to join a more ambitious project capable of competing regularly for major trophies, even if it means relinquishing his status as an undisputed star at Atletico Madrid. Barcelona has emerged as the club most strongly linked to his intentions.

Internally, Atletico’s sporting director Mateu Alemany is already aware of Alvarez’s desire to join a more prestigious sporting project. Despite rumours of tension between the player and Diego Simeone, the club insists those claims are false.

Simeone played an instrumental role in bringing Alvarez from Manchester City and has consistently supported him through both successful and difficult periods. However, the striker’s ambition to compete at the highest level and win major honours, combined with Barcelona’s interest, has driven his desire to move.

Atletico maintains its stance

Despite the growing uncertainty, Atletico Madrid remains firm in its position: Alvarez will only be allowed to leave if a significant transfer fee is paid, with a minimum valuation set at €150 million.

Behind the scenes, internal debates have emerged — some believe the club should hold firm, while others see an opportunity to profit and strengthen the squad under Alemany’s sporting vision. What’s clear is that Atletico will not make his departure easy, especially to Barcelona.

Doubts also persist within the club over Barcelona’s financial ability to meet their demands, even if alternative options such as player swaps are considered. Names like Ferran Torres have been mentioned internally as potential bargaining chips, though no concrete progress has been made.

At this stage, Atletico Madrid is not ruling out any scenario, but they emphasize that Alvarez will not leave under favourable terms or without a substantial transfer fee.

Barcelona Establishes Initial Contact with Serie A Goal Machine Over Potential Move

With the potential transfer of Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid now uncertain, Barcelona has turned its attention to other options in the transfer market as they continue their search for a new centre-forward.

Joao Pedro from Chelsea has emerged as a leading target, though signing the Brazilian international will not be straightforward. As a result, the newly crowned La Liga champions are also considering alternative targets — one of them being Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan.

First contact initiated

According to recent reports, Barcelona is highly interested in Lautaro Martinez and has contacted the player’s representatives to understand the terms that Inter Milan might demand for his departure. Both parties have reportedly agreed to remain in communication.

The 2022 World Cup-winning striker is greatly admired by coach Hansi Flick, who has proposed him as an alternative to Julian Alvarez. Lautaro Martinez was close to joining Barcelona in June 2020 when the club had reached a full agreement with the player on a five-year contract worth €12 million per season to replace Luis Suarez. However, the move collapsed due to financial issues.

Lautaro’s departure from Inter remains difficult

Inter Milan considers Lautaro Martinez irreplaceable, making any potential move extremely challenging. The Argentine star is not only one of the team’s most prominent figures but also serves as the club captain. In August 2024, he signed a six-year contract extension with Inter, making him the highest-paid player in Serie A with a net salary approaching €9 million per season plus bonuses.

Given that Inter Milan has already set high transfer valuations for other Barcelona targets such as Alessandro Bastoni, the club is expected to demand a substantial fee for Lautaro Martinez should they even entertain the idea of his sale.
