Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has commended Paris Saint-Germain leader Marquinhos for his remarkable show of class and sportsmanship following the Champions League final. Just moments after Gabriel Magalhaes missed a decisive penalty in the shootout that secured PSG the title, Marquinhos set aside his team’s celebrations to console his distraught international teammate — a gesture Odegaard described as that of a true gentleman.
European heartbreak for Arsenal
Arsenal’s long-standing quest for Champions League triumph remains unfulfilled after a narrow and painful defeat to PSG. Mikel Arteta’s men looked poised for victory when Kai Havertz fired the opener, placing the North London club in an ideal position to finally claim the coveted European crown.
However, the French champions mounted a strong comeback in the second half. Ousmane Dembele’s equaliser forced the match into extra time and eventually to a tense penalty shootout. The decisive moment came when Brazilian defender Gabriel failed to convert his spot-kick, effectively sealing Arsenal’s fate and handing the championship to PSG.
Marquinhos displays leadership and empathy
Immediately after the deciding miss, PSG captain Marquinhos was seen stepping away from his team’s celebrations to console his fellow Brazilian, Gabriel. It was a display of genuine compassion between two elite defenders, and the act drew admiration from Arsenal’s captain.
Reflecting on the moment, Odegaard was full of respect for the experienced PSG defender, recognising the esteem he holds within the football community. “He’s a gentleman. He’s probably one of the most experienced players still playing,” Odegaard said, visibly touched by the act despite the disappointment of the loss.
Experience nurtures respect
Odegaard believes Marquinhos’ reaction came from years of experience in Europe’s top-level competitions. Having been a cornerstone of PSG’s numerous Champions League campaigns, Marquinhos understands the emotional toll that a critical mistake in a major final can inflict on a player.
The Norwegian midfielder elaborated on this point, saying: “He’s been through both the good and the bad sides of a final like this, and he knows exactly what we’re feeling right now.”
Declan Rice stands by his teammates
Declan Rice also voiced his support for Eberechi Eze and Gabriel after their missed penalties in the Champions League final. Speaking to TNT Sports, the midfielder emphasised the duo’s crucial role in Arsenal’s achievements this season. “It’s heartbreaking. Missing a penalty in a Champions League final is tough. But we love them. These things happen in football. They won’t be the last players to miss in a final. Everyone has done it. Without both of them, we wouldn’t have won the Premier League this season. It’s painful, but we have to take the positives,” Rice said.
