Ruben Dias has officially confirmed that his relationship with Maya Jama has come to an end, while firmly dismissing rumours suggesting he was unfaithful. The Manchester City defender expressed frustration that ongoing speculation had escalated to the point of causing distress within his own family.
Dias addresses the separation and denies rumours
The Portugal international publicly acknowledged that he and the Love Island presenter have parted ways. After weeks of rumours circulating about their breakup, the Man City star decided to break his silence. Dias took to Instagram to make it clear that infidelity played no part in their split.
Dias reacts to allegations
According to Dias, the rumours had reached a stage where they started interfering with his personal life and affecting his family members. The defender shared that the continuous online chatter and media speculation pushed him to speak out, especially after his elderly relatives began hearing and questioning the accusations.
In his Instagram post, Dias stated: “When my 85-year-old grandfather starts asking if I’ve cheated on my girlfriend because he’s seen it repeatedly in the news, that’s where I draw the line between what is acceptable and what isn’t. Maya and I have always shared a relationship based on mutual respect, and no boundary was ever crossed in that sense.”
He continued: “A lie repeated enough times can start to sound like the truth, and that’s why I want to make it clear that I never cheated, nor was I ever tempted to. Maya deserves nothing but respect.”
“The reasons behind our breakup are private and belong to both of us, and we’ve handled it with maturity. I’ve always preferred to keep my personal life private, but I also believe it’s wrong to mislead people or create a false image of someone for the sake of clicks. Please respect both me and Maya, and understand that relationships don’t always end because of betrayal.”
A rare public statement from Dias
Dias, who has typically maintained a low profile regarding his private life, surprised many by making such a public response. Speculation about the couple’s status intensified in mid-May after both removed photos of each other from their social media profiles. The pair reportedly began dating after meeting at the MTV EMAs in Manchester in November 2024 and went public with their relationship in April 2025.
Focus shifts back to football
With the issue now clarified, Dias is expected to turn his attention back to football. The central defender continues to play a key role in Manchester City’s lineup and signed a contract extension last year that keeps him at the club until 2029. Currently, he is preparing for international duty with Portugal ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Portugal have been drawn in Group K alongside DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia. Before the tournament, the Selecao will play two friendly matches — one against Chile on June 6 and another against Nigeria on June 10.
