The Iranian national football team has been dealt a major blow ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, as their key striker Sardar Azmoun — often dubbed the “Iranian Messi” — will not feature in the tournament following accusations of betrayal by Iranian authorities.

Azmoun, aged 31, has previously played for top European clubs including Bayer Leverkusen and AS Roma. Currently representing Shabab Al Ahli Dubai FC, he has been accused of “treason” and “disloyal conduct” after posting a controversial photograph on social media.

The controversy began when Azmoun shared a picture on his Instagram account, which boasts more than 5.8 million followers, showing him alongside the Emir of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The Emir is known to be an ally of the United States and a supporter of Donald Trump’s stance against Iran, which reportedly angered Iranian officials.

Although Azmoun deleted the image shortly after posting it, the act was perceived as a political affront. As a result, Iranian authorities sanctioned the forward, effectively ruling him out of contention for a place in Iran’s squad for the World Cup.

This decision comes as a heavy setback for Team Melli, who will compete in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. Azmoun’s absence could significantly impact Iran’s attacking strength and overall prospects in the tournament.

The exclusion of one of Iran’s most experienced and talented players underscores the increasing tension between sports and politics in the country, just months before the biggest football event on the planet.
