Manchester United are reportedly considering a move to strengthen their defence, given the persistent injury concerns surrounding several of their key players.
Matthijs de Ligt has been out of action since November and, following his surgery, there is still uncertainty about when the Dutch defender will be fit to return. Lisandro Martinez has also endured multiple injuries since his arrival at Old Trafford, while Luke Shaw’s fitness issues continue to be a major concern.
Although the club recently secured Harry Maguire on a short-term extension, the 33-year-old centre-back is not capable of handling three matches per week. Youngsters Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro are still developing, leaving the 20-time English league champions with little choice but to seek reinforcements in the transfer market.
According to reports from The Mirror, the Red Devils have now turned their attention towards Borussia Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton.
The development is somewhat unexpected, as INEOS have been known to prefer signing players under the age of 26, whereas Anton, a Germany international, is already 29 years old.
The report further mentions that United are evaluating a potential £35 million offer for the Uzbekistan-born defender.
“Manchester United are weighing up a £35million bid for Borussia Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton. United boss Michael Carrick is eager to add a new centre-back this summer and has dispatched scouts to observe Anton in action.
“Serious doubts remain about the short-term futures of United pair Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt. Both have been sidelined with significant injuries, and the club continues to be concerned about their poor fitness records.
“United may now move for Anton and make him one of their summer acquisitions. Anton joined Dortmund from Stuttgart in 2024 for £18 million and has since become one of the Bundesliga’s standout defenders.”
In addition to being a central defender, Waldemar Anton is also capable of playing as a right-back. His current market valuation stands at £15.5 million — notably lower than United’s estimated opening bid.
The German defender is set to represent his country in the upcoming World Cup, and his performances on the global stage could significantly boost his market value amid growing interest from other clubs.
However, this could also be a strategic move by Borussia Dortmund to increase Anton’s valuation and ensure the best possible return from his sale. The defender’s current contract with the club runs until 2028.
