Manchester United have made a powerful statement in the transfer market by reportedly finalising a £38 million deal to bring in Atalanta midfielder Ederson. With personal terms agreed for a long-term contract, the Brazilian looks set to become the first major signing under Michael Carrick, as the Red Devils aim to revitalise their midfield ahead of the next season.
Red Devils reach deal with Atalanta
According to Sky Sports, United have agreed to sign Ederson from Atalanta in a transfer worth £38 million in total. The Premier League giants will pay an initial £34 million (€40.5m/$45.7m), with an additional £3.8 million (€4.5m/$5m) in potential add-ons. The transfer is expected to be completed before July, pending the successful completion of the player's medical at Carrington.
The Brazilian international is set to sign a four-year deal at Old Trafford, with the club holding an option to extend it for a further 12 months. This move follows a long period of interest from United, who have identified the former Salernitana star as a key target to add energy and versatility to Carrick’s tactical setup.
Financial restructuring fuels Carrick's recruitment plan
United’s early move in the market has been made possible by a major restructuring of the club’s financial framework. Reports suggest that the club has cleared £110 million in debt in recent weeks, increasing their flexibility for summer spending. This improved financial position has allowed United to act swiftly, avoiding the drawn-out negotiations that have hindered them in past transfer windows.
Chief executive Omar Berrada recently expressed confidence in the club’s trajectory, saying: “We feel very positive about the club's progress this season and the continuing positive impact of our business transformation initiatives.” With improved revenue and cost management, Carrick has been given the financial support to strengthen the squad without breaching financial regulations.
Midfield rebuild continues with Fernandes pursuit
Although Ederson marks a significant signing, Manchester United’s midfield overhaul is far from over. The club are reportedly leading the race to sign West Ham's Mateus Fernandes this summer. The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder is viewed as a long-term prospect who could eventually form a partnership with club captain Bruno Fernandes in the heart of midfield.
The pursuit of multiple midfielders aligns with the club’s strategy to refresh the squad. Veteran midfielder Casemiro is expected to leave Old Trafford, while reports suggest that Manuel Ugarte could also be on his way out following an underwhelming spell.
Carrick targets more reinforcements
Ederson’s arrival is just the start of what is expected to be a busy transfer window for Manchester United. Beyond midfield reinforcements, the club is also prioritising the addition of a left winger and a specialist left-back. Despite the substantial outlay on Ederson, United are still in the market for a defensive midfielder to fill the void left by Casemiro’s departure.
By wrapping up Ederson’s signing and progressing talks with other top targets, United aim to provide Carrick with a complete squad well before pre-season. The onus will now be on the coaching staff to convert this strong financial backing into improved performances when the new campaign kicks off in August.
